You don’t always need to take a class to enjoy the waters
August 12, 2009 9:56 pm TravelAfter you have taken sailing courses, you will want to maintain your skills. Many people who get their day skipper certification do not own their own boat. While many marinas or private groups offer boats for rent, you can also check out schools that offer sailing courses. In addition to Rya courses, many of these schools offer “experience days.” These specialized sailing courses allow you to brush up on specific skills. These are great for people who have received their day skipper certification, as well as others with more advanced training. They are great for anyone who wants to advance their skills, but does not have time to take any of the complete Rya courses.
If you do not wish to go through a school offering Rya courses, you can ask at your local marina about boats available for rent. You will not want to sail alone or unassisted unless you have passed the day skipper qualification. This ensures that you are confident enough to handle the craft, ensuring an enjoyable day on the water. Your day of sailing will become much less enjoyable if you suffer an accident. If you do not yet have your day skipper certification, it is recommended that you bring along someone who has achieved this certification (or higher). Having an experienced yachtsman on board keeps the day safe and fun for all.
